More blogs on Tumbler than WordPress.com

As of June 2011, there are more blogs on Tumblr than on WordPress.com — according to PCMag.com.

Tumblr is a microblogging platform that allows anyone to create a blog for free. It is kind of like twitter in that its posts are a bit short, sometimes just a photo or a link. But there is no character limit.

WordPress has been around for twice as long as Tumblr, but Tumblr has picked up more blogger more rapidly. Note that we are talking about WordPress.com, the hosted blogging platform where the blog is located on the WordPress.com’s own servers. We are not talking about the open-source self-hosted software at WordPress.org which anyone can download and install and host on their own webhost.

As of June 2011, tumblr has 20.9 million blogs after picking up 7 million blog in 6 months. Tumblr’s been around since 2007. WordPress.com has 20.8 million blogs and has been around since 2003.
